Food for thought

Ezra Klein has an interesting comment alongside this graph:

If half of that cash was going to support the sort of sustainable, healthful agriculture society claims to want, the prices of fresh, nutritious food would plummet. For all the talk of the health costs, the most economically rational purchase on earth is a Big Mac. Or possibly a 99 cent double cheeseburger.

Note that the health of grains may be somewhat over-rated, since it is approximated that about 10 to 20% of people have difficulty digesting grains (I'm now included in this camp) with resulting bowel problems and health risks if they do. It has been shown that even healthy people have difficulty digesting grains and can suffer negative long term affects (source: mental recall from various books I'm reading that can't readly be listed since I'm at work).
